Red Right Return & Hurricane Irma

It's hard to believe this is my first blog post this month.   Living in Southeast Florida we are conditioned and prepared for hurricane season.   I have lived in So. Florida for over 18 years and Hurricane Irma was the first time I was put under a mandatory evacuation.   I live near the Hillsboro Inlet & Lighthouse that feeds in to the Atlantic.   My  home is across the street from the Intracoastal Waterway and we were warned of a possible 10 foot tidal surge so I had not choice but to leave.   Miss Irma really put a kink in my tablescaping.

Two Summer tables were planned on the calendar prior to the first day of Fall, but Hurricane Irma changed those plans rather quickly.  I set the Red Right Return table up on Sunday, September 3rd and made the photographs.  On Tuesday, September 5th I was packing everything away and using the dining table as a hurricane prep station.     Red Right Return is the name of the Lilly Pulitzer pattern  on the place mats.  They were made using Lilly Pulitzer shopping bags.   I thought about holding off and posting it next Summer, but I decided to go ahead with the post.   It's been a wild ride since Sept 8th (our evac date), riding out the hurricane in Ocala where it tracked right over us as a Hurricane 1.  I returned home to no power for over a week in 90 plus degree weather.  It was pure misery.   As soon as I had power I had a family emergency in North Carolina and drove North for several days.    I'm back in South Florida for the time being and look forward to creating a Fall tablescape this weekend.

Red Right Return tablescape.   The tall ship plates are from Home Goods.

 RED RIGHT RETURN

The glasses reminded me of sea glass and the ocean.  They are from Home Goods early in the Summer.

The life ring candle holders were purchased at Cracker Barrel.   They have the neatest items in their country store.  I used mints to make the napkin rings.
The carved wooden ship captain was found at a local antique store in North Carolina.   The Lilly Pulitzer Red Right Return candle was a Home Good find.   Every season Lilly clears out the warehouses and Home Goods, TJ Maxx and Marshalls end up with the items.  The shopping bags I used to make the place mats were found at Home Goods.

Overhead view of the table.

I used a hot pink fabric tablecloth and covered it with fishing net.

The layers.

The place setting stack.

I used a standard charger plate as a template to cut the shopping bags.

Four place mats cut using two shopping bags before adding the ball fringe.

I sewed white ball fringe to the edge of the circles.  I had planned on adding ric rac, but the hot pink color did not match the pink in the print.

Place mats finished.

  1. I love this tablescape. But I'm so sorry you've had such a crazy month. Other than a miserable week with no power,I hope you didn't have any other damage from Irma, and I hope your NC folks are all okay now, too. I,m glad to know you are back home safely. And I need to get to Home Goods one day soon!

    1. Thank you so much Joy! It's good to be back online and blogging again. I had a little water damage from the wind blowing the rain sideways in around the front door, but other than that my home was okay. I'm afraid I will be heading back to North Carolina soon. My Dad entered hospice today so my next trip home will be a sad one. I appreciate you stopping by the blog and make sure you get over to Home Goods. They opened a new one a few blocks from my home, but I haven't been over since the hurricane. I need to stop in soon.

    2. Oh, Catherine, I am so sorry to read about your Dad. I went down that road with mine 3 years ago and it is hard. I will keep you and your family in my prayers.
I wish there was a Home Goods near my little town in N. Georgia. There is a fairly new TJ Maxx about 25 miles away, which I visit as often as I can. Home Goods is more like 100 miles - either in Marietta or Chattanooga. So it's a treat when I get to Home Goods!

    3. Thank you Joy. It's going to be so different without him, but he's with my Mom now and at peace. It's too bad Home Goods doesn't have some sort of online store. I'm lucky to have them close by, but sometimes I wish they were not so close by.

  2. So glad you're ok, Catherine. What a frightening time for you! I love this tablescape. Your attention to detail is extraordinary (taking the time to create your original charger plates is very impressive!) Your efforts have paid off beautifully. Bravo! Rosie @ The Magic Hutch

    1. Thank you Rosie. It was a very stressful time for everyone affected by Irma. Things are slowly getting back to normal. I would like to pack away the hurricane kit, but we have two more months of hurricane season...

    1. Thank you Sandy. I almost saved the pictures for next season, but I'm happy I decided to go ahead and share. I agree on the RRR. I wish I had purchased a few Lilly pieces in this print. It's so pretty.

  4. Visiting from Linda's blog today. So sorry to read your words on your dad and hospice. May God's peace be with your family. Love your table. Very colorful and love how you used the shopping bags. Glad you all are fine from Irma. We are in Florida as well and I am just thankful that we only experienced power outage(which was bad enough) and major debris in our yard. Hugs and blessings, Cindy
