Winter Olympics 2018

I am a huge fan of the Olympic Games and have really enjoyed the Winter games from Pyeong Chang.  I enjoy all the sports,  but my favorites are snowboarding, halfpipe snowboarding, downhill skiing,  bobsledding, luge and of course figure skating.  I'm still trying to figure out curling.  It reminds me too much of my least favorite chore.. mopping.

I enjoy styling a table for the Olympics.  My first blog post was the Rio Summer Olympic Games tablescape in 2016. This was be my fourth Olympic table.  I started with the 2012 Summer Games in London followed by the 2014 Sochi Winter Games.    I enjoy collecting Olympic and sports themed items to use on the table.  You will see a few of the Olympic themed items I have made over the years.     This year I crocheted mittens and a cap for the table.  You will see the mittens below holding the flatware.   Children mittens were the perfect size.    While shopping this past weekend I found two sets of Team USA mittens at Old Navy for $2.00.   That was a deal so I had to have them for the table.

Olympic place setting.

I used a pair of skates, gloves and hats on the table.

I found these 1994 Los Angeles Olympic fine bone china pieces on Shop Goodwill.   They are marked as official pieces of the 1980 L.A. Olympic committee and Queen's by Papel  made in England.    It's amazing what you can find on the Goodwill online site and eBay.

The Team USA mittens were found at Old Navy this past week.  I've had the Olympic pins for several years.  The Albertville, France 1992 games pin is on the left and Torino 2006 games pin is on the right.

I made the Olympic rings wine charms and napkin rings in 2016.

I crocheted the childrens mittens and cap.

I used sleigh ornaments as place card holders.  I purchased these at Walmart and removed the Christmas greenery.   I also invited two of my favorite Olympians for dinner.  Shaun White and Kelly Clark are amazing halfpipe snowboarders.   I've followed both for years.  Kelly's cousin is a Facebook friend of mine so I'm able to keep up with her snowboarding accomplishments.

I tucked the gold flatware inside the mitten.

I use the flag and faux torch display on all of my Olympic tablescapes.   I used foam core  and ribbon to make the Olympic rings.

The server with a couple skiers and wax illuminated trees.

I created a little vignette of trees and a Lemax skier with his dog inside the cake dome.

The Valerie Parr Hill beaded candle rings really add sparkle to the Winterscape.

The blue plate is from the 1972 Munich games.  I found this while shopping for plates at my local Goodwill a few years ago.

I love these little skiers.  They are made by Lemax.

Over head view of the table.  It's hard to detect, but I added in a white pom pom garland I made.

The stack starts with a white faux fur Christmas tree skirt as the table cloth.   The fabric chargers and the same ones I used on my 2016 Summer Olympic table. The print reminded me of the Olympic rings.  The red dinner plates is from Pier One.  The Hallmark Parade of Nations top plate is part of the Olympic Spirit Collection.  These were made for the Centennial Olympic Games in 1996 that were held in Atlanta, GA.

  1. Your creativity continues to amaze me! I just LOVE this table. Of course, I do love all things Olympics. If I'd ever seen those Atlanta plates, I'd have bought some - I was a volunteer at those Games. I have some paper plates but not "real" ones. I need to check ebay and the Goodwill site, I've never visited that one! Keep enjoying the Games for a few more days. I'm always sad when they are over.

    1. Thank you Joy. I found one of the Hallmark dessert plates in my local Goodwill store and I think I purchased the other one on eBay. The covered casserole and gravy boat was purchased on the Goodwill website. I'm always searching for Olympic items. I have several Hallmark Summer figurines from the Atlanta games. I'm sure it was exciting working at the games. I wish I would have traveled down from NC to the games. I was only 4 hours away. I really hope to make it ot the next LA Summer games

  2. Fun table! I love to watch the Nordic skiing events and speed-skating. Oh, and biathlon, and figure-skating, and alpine skating, and bobsledding. Curling, not so much!

  3. Wow Catherine, you have thought of absolutely everything! The furry cloth, the mittens and sleds, not to mention the rings, flags, torch and medals! And all your authentic china pieces, Wow again! My favorite part is the little skiers on the sideboard, so much fun! I enjoy watching the Olympics, and I don't understand curling either, it actually cracks me up seeing grown men, as you say mopping the floor, with such intensity! Wonderful setting!!

    1. Thank you so much Jenna. I'm going to miss the games when they end this weekend. The Today Show did a segment this morning about the Tokyo 2020 Summer Games. I'm already planning that table in my mind. :)

  5. Catherine, you have set the bar high. Love your
Winter Olympics theme. The rings look fabulous. you put your heart and soul into this and it certainly shows. I agree about the curling event, not sure it that means an Olympic skill...LOL

    1. Thank you Linda. I really enjoy the Olympic Games, but Winter and Summer. This was a fun table to pull together. The funny thing is I had ordered the Los Angeles China back in the Summer and packed it away. I tore my storage unit about on Monday morning looking for it with no luck. I had stored it in a closet here at the house the box was clearly marked OLYMPIC CHINA. Goodness, I have too many dishes! Enjoy the rest of the games. I'm not sure if the US men won the curling competition today or not. I'm still trying to figure it out. lol

  6. OH my gosh! Your table is smashing, as you say!!! Oh, I had to pin just about every photo because the Olympics are HUGE in our family! My husband was a really good pole vaulter and won every meet practically in high school and in college in his area in Sacramento, California. Thirty years almost to the day Charles took 2nd at the CIF State meet, our son Peter Chapman won 1st. Peter went on to the Univ. of South Dakota, Vermillion, and spent four years with coach and Olympian Derek Miles vaulting for the university. Derek was awarded the bronze medal eight years after the 2008 Olympics after the Russian vaulter who originally had it was disqualified. Our son has since retired after graduating form college but he had a great time finishing out at 17' 3.5" and flying over bars in the 18 1/2 foot range. His issue was winds in the midwest... the nemesis of a lot of vaulters! :) So, you know I love your table!!!!!

We have been watching every evening and I'm so proud of our country but I root for all the athletes. They train so hard! By the way, my son, after winning the Summit League's Outdoor Pole Vault meet his freshman year, Coach Miles made him do 500 sit-ups for "core conditioning." And we all complain if we have to do 10 or 20... Lol!

Have a great rest of your weekend!

    1. Thank you so much Barbara! What a fabulous story about your husband son. I've always enjoyed watching the pole vault competition. I'm sad the Olympics are over, but my body is probably happy that it's getting to bed at a decent hour. I was up until 0230 AM watching the women's hockey game. The 2020 Summer Games will be here before we know it. Thanks again for stopping by!

    1. THank you Kathleen. I was happy when I found the first Hallmark Atlanta 1996 plate at Goodwill. I started to search on eBay and Shop Goodwill for more. The 1984 Olympic Games pieces came from a Goodwill store in Washington State. I'm hoping I will find more pieces for the 2020 games. THank you for stopping by and thanks for hosting Vintage Charm.

  8. When we were handed the beer menu I was impressed. Really nice selection of beers and ciders at LA event venues. With 20 rotating craft beer lines, there is more than enough to choose from. This place is among the best around here.
